I don't want to start this blog being all emotional and such, but I just wanted to tell you guys that I miss you and love you! I will never find friends like the two of you. You truly are my best friends (and don't you forget that).
So now that I have bored you with all the mushy stuff, I will now get you both updated on my happenings. Well, right now I am working two jobs/internships (whatever the hell you want to call them). I am working at RFK Memorial Center for Human Rights (M,W,F) and for Dr. Gordon Tullock (T, TH). At RFK, I do legal research on issues concerning human rights abusers at home and abroad. Right now I am researching the corporate structures of Burger King, Subway, Wendy's and Chipotle, to determine from whom they purchase their tomatoes. As you may or may not know, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers won a battle against Taco Bell and McDonald's, receiving a penny per pound of tomatoes increase in wages for immigrant farmworkers. We are trying to do the same with the other fast food giants. I am also doing a whole bunch of other stuff, but figured, you guys heard enough about RFK. As for Dr. Tullock, he is a reknowned economist/legal scholar who is currently writing yet another book. He has been up for the Nobel Peace Prize at least 12 times and has been recognized as one of the top ten economists of his time. So, hopefully, I will get an awesome reccommendation letter from him.
So, now you guys are caught up on my summer activities....
As I told Katie, my mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in mid-may. She had surgery to take the tumor out (aka "whipple" - they take out parts and reconnect parts, a long and complicated process). Anyway, the surgery took almost 12 hours, but the surgeon was able to take the entire tumor out. Luckily, her margins were negative (meaning the cancer had not spread). Unfortunately, though, she will still have to endure 5 months of chemo (not the type where hair falls out). She's a tough cookie, but I will be happy when all of this is over.
Ok, now to happier news. NO, I am not engaged, but Eskimo Katie is. She got engaged a few weeks ago to Yossel (I'm not sure if you guys met him). I am one of her bridesmaids. I believe she will have her wedding next October and her colors are going to be chocolate brown and blue (not quite sure how that is going to work out).
Onto yet another subject, Kevin and I went to the Cayman Islands for five days and enjoyed ourselves tremendously. I got sunburned, of course (my skin wasn't used to the sun anymore after being up here where the sun don't shine - aka - Virginia). We snorkeled, went on a submarine, visited Hell (a touristy spot claimed to look like Hell), and ate a crapload. I will post some pics later when I go home (yes, I have a lot of free time at work). All in all, it was a great vacation especially since it was free (including the booze)!!!! Kevin got an award from his company and this vacation came with it.
Finally, this weekend Kevin and I are going to go camping at Shenandoah. Don't worry I won't come back all gross and unshaven like "Bad Heather" ... I am only going for the weekend. I promise to post pics of that as well.
Oh before I save this, I just wanted to tell you guys about my knitting and crocheting projects. Kevin doesn't quite appreciate them like you guys. I am knitting a shawl for my mom, a bikini for my sis, a tank top for myself, and a dress for myself. I also recommend the knitting book, "Sexy Little Knits."
All right, now that I completely bored you both to death, I will conclude with saying:
I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU BOTH!!!!
Jen
